Many districts have turned to renewable energy projects as a cost savings option. The vast majority of these projects involve power purchase agreements or district owned and financed photovoltaic systems. The presenters will discuss their experiences with renewable energy procurement, and answer audience questions on the subject. Items to discuss include: 1) how the drop in the SREC market impacts current and future projects, 2) issues to consider in the development of RFPs and project specifications, 3) roof and maintenance issues, 4) joint solar projects with other districts or governmental entities, and 5) available procurement methods.

The lure of the Energy Savings Improvement Plan (ESIP) is the promise that “savings generated from reduced energy use … will be sufficient to cover the cost of the program’s energy conservation measures.” But developing and implementing a plan in conformance with statutory requirements and school district budget restrictions requires close attention to detail by the district’s Buildings and Grounds Committee, business administrator and attorney. Learn from one district’s experience.
